Dyadic studies

Updated this week

A common question we get is whether or not Prolific can help with dyadic studies.

We don't offer the experimental software itself, but we can provide the participants. At any given moment during daytime in your local time zone, hundreds of participants are active on our site. This makes it possible to pair them up for dyadic experiments or run multiplayer games.

Prolific uses convenience sampling, meaning study places are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Good to know:

  • We cannot guarantee successful pairings

  • You will need to specify wait times for participants waiting to be matched

  • Participants may need a partial payment if they aren't matched

  • Participants cannot be rejected for failing to match

We have separate guidance on running studies on couples here: How do I run studies with couples?

What if a pairing is blocked because only one participant per household can take part?

This can happen when our system detects that two participants are in the same household, and automatically blocks one of them.

To avoid this, set up your couples study using a two-study approach, as explained here: How do I run studies with couples?

In short, you will need to run separate studies that target different individuals within the couple, so both participants can take part without triggering the household restriction.
